The disinfection of public places by Solwezi Council has cheered marketeers at Kyawama market.

One of the marketeers at the market Josephine Katongo expressed happiness at the exercise being undertaken by the local authority.

Solwezi Council in its continued to combat further spread of the Coronavirus in Solwezi district, it has conducted massive disinfection of Kyawama market following recorded cases of the coronavirus in the district.

Kyawama market accommodates over 2000 traders making it the biggest market in the district.

Ms Katongo said public places such as markets attract a lot of people from all corners of the district due to the wide range of services offered.

She said with the high population of people that frequent Kyawama market, it had the potential to be Solwezi’s hotspot if not properly managed.

And Solwezi Municipal Council Assistant Public Relations Manager Esther Chirwa said a combined team of Public Health Inspectors and Fire Brigade Officers disinfected the market shelters and frequently touched surfaces of shops around the market.

Ms Chirwa said the Fire engine used with a total of 5000 litres of disinfectant giving the marketeers peace of mind that their work place was sanitized.

“The local authority extends its sincere gratitude to the traders at Kyawama market for the positive response as it shows their eagerness to have the market disinfected in order to protect themselves and their families against contracting the coronavirus.

“The municipality is also grateful to the German government through its implementing agency GIZ for donating disinfectants among other items to Solwezi Municipal Council to enhance the fight against the coronavirus. While at Kyawama Market, Mayor of Solwezi toured the market to inspect the market boundaries,” she said.
